This is a book that every law-abiding person should read. It will teach you the basic skills needed to avoid trouble and to protect yourself when your life is threatened. The author is an expert on the subject with over forty years of experience in protecting the public. There are various modes of action for various scenarios but you have to know something about the type of criminal you are dealing with in order to make the right move. This book will tell you what to look for so that you know what to do. It will help you to prepare yourself and to evaluate your chances of succeeding. Most of the time, you can escape unharmed. THIS BOOK COULD EASILY SAVE YOUR LIFE.

For someone like me who had only heard of the growing "prison industrial complex," this book was a great introduction to the topic. In the first part of the book, Cayley gives a good overview of why prisons are expanding. He lays out what he understands are the foundational rationales for imprisonment today. The third part of the book (and close to half of the entire book) goes into exploring alternatives to the current way of administering justice. The alternatives Cayley presents are all centered on the importance of community and on humanizing not only the offender, but also the victim.
