The author's purpose in writing this book is to give the reader an inside perspective about what made Lou Piniella a baseball legend. The book is written in a narrative style and in chronological order starting with Lou's career in baseball as a player with the New York Yankees. The theme of the book is to show how Lou's enthusiasm for America's pastime is demonstrated in his emotions for all aspects of the game. He was portrayed in various stories, by many different people, as a caring person. Although he has a fiery temper, everyone said that after his tantrums were over, he never carried a grudge against anyone. It was agreed that his success as a manager was because he cared about his players more than he cared about himself. I read this book because I am a Cubs fan and I like baseball. I have admired Lou Piniella from the time he became the Manager of the Cubs in 2007. I really enjoyed reading this book. The stories about Lou and his baseball life, especially his tantrums, made me laugh. I recommend this book if you are a baseball fan or you just like Lou PIniella.

This book is incredibly dense making it at times hard to read. The chapter that covers the Yankee years in around 100 pages. I really had a hard time also with the depection of Piniella being treated badly by the Cubs.
