Review # 1 was written on 2010-06-30 00:00:00 John Morris I really, really enjoyed the first half. It's fascinating to hear why someone who doesn't believe in God in a literal/traditional sense chose to join a church. In fact, I was enjoying it so much so that I wanted to copy it and make everyone I know read it. I did not enjoy the section on the environment and fundamentalism nearly as much--at times, he almost veers into Luddite territory. And now I fel like I need to re-read the first bit. Overall, worth checking out, but fell short of the 'amazing' mark. Random observation: For someone who's so well-known for his (feminist) work on masculinity, I was disappointed to see that he almost never quotes or cites women as his inspiration (the one exception I recall was his philosopher prof from undergrad). |
Review # 2 was written on 2014-09-25 00:00:00 Criss Ceci The question of how to deal with the Christian right is an important one, as is the question of whether religion is inherently a problem or if it just seems that way because the ones we're exposed to were designed as tools for power building. I used to be more of the opinion that religion is a horrible way to unify and educate people but after years of studying primitive groups and developing a better understanding of what our modern scientific approach requires in order to prove what's "true", I feel that we really do need a more "ignorance-based" or humble approach to explaining things. I still don't agree with trying to make Christianity work but I can at least understand why people like Robert Jensen are trying. Whether you agree with him or not this one really makes you think. |
