Vigfus is a great new character I think (and hope) we'll be seeing more of. I'm a dad who reads a lot to my kids, and though this is written for 4-8 year olds, there's such subtlety in the writing and illustrations that every time I read it I find new gems that make me smile. This is written by authors clearly in control of their craft, and there's a great lesson here about making friends and not losing oneself in the process. The illustrations are witty and fun, and complement the text, rather than just pictorialize it, and to me that's always the hallmark of a great children's books. I strongly recommend it for kids up to about 10.

Book #5 for 2013 Despite its amusing drawings and the occasional turn of phrase that made me chuckle, I cannot recommend this book. It paints Vikings in an extremely unflattering light, suggesting that all of them were dim-witted, devoid of any culture beyond waging war, and not quite human. Does the author truly believe that Vikings did not have any concept of friendship? Wow. I wonder if he thinks that about African tribes, too. Maybe he should try writing a similar book about a pre-colonial family from Black Africa and see what reaction he gets.
