Set some time after DMC1 and almost directly before DMC2, Devil May Cry (Volume 2) novel tells a story not connected to main thread nor explaining anything from previous installments. The only link with the DMC saga is Dante himself and Mundus. A beautiful young woman (no less) shows up and commissions Dante to help her with her demonic problem, which turns out to be more complicated than originally imagined. Additionally, the two devil hunters get tangled into criminal underworld and dodgy research. Surprisingly, this is not a bad novel. The plot itself does not interfere with canon - Dante is amazingly in character, Beryl seems decently developed. The book provides even a realistic amount of third party characters, although they all are somewhat... flat. Setting suits DMC2 well - it's actually possible to imagine this new world, dark cities and advanced sciences. The intrigue is another of let's-save-the-world type, but it had potential, except that ridiculous parallel universes part. It could have been a good novel. Instead, it was developed as nothing more than a complex script. Did publishers set up some page limit? Did the writer have problems with expanding some subjects? Devil May Cry (Volume 2) had the spark that could have been transformed into a full novel with intriguing plot, interesting characters and solid setting, if only it had more volume to fit these things in. It is still a nice thing to read, provided you don't mind roughly 200 pages of action. It's much better than Devil May Cry (Volume 1), that's for sure.

Guilty as charged for enjoying. The writing really could have been better, but for a game to book transition, it wasn't too bad. It has its own separate story, which is also nice, since it can't change anything canon for you. I love Dante's invincible-and-yet-not personality. His fun/stupid jokes even when he's stressed, or not, really make the book. Cool climatic scene, too. Yes, this was a little crappy, but I still liked it. Rating PG13 Knowing this there was very likely strong language. Medium violence, and some jokes of a sexual nature. Also demons are a large part of the story if you are uncomfortable with that.
