I just stayed up till 4:30am last week writing a paper on Descartes and the skeptics. This book was my lifesaver. It opened and then held the door for me into a world of the meditations. I've always loved routledge classics and their books consistently live up to their name. Hatfield's writing was neither pretentious nor condescending. It was the perfect medium to make a wonderfully helpful scholarly tool!

Hatfield is clear to the point and often careful of the variety of interpretations. This book is the most accessible Descartes that I know but what kept me interested was his list of further readings and his attempt to situate Descartes in his historical context and giving serious considerations to his ideas. I used this book as a guideline for a short compact reading of the meditations. I ended up sharing it with my friends and co-thinker alike and they've all responded with appraisal. its sad that this book hasn't been translated into my native language as it can serve as a great companion for students of philosophy as well as its instructors. the only draw back is that Hatfield is sometimes too generous in his take on the meditations something that can perhaps be remedied by the reader when they spend time coming to their own conclusions.
