This book would probably be a good read for someone who was considering therapy, which is particularly good news because that is the intended audience. If someone is interested in learning more about therapy, this would be a decent resource to answer many questions. The author indicates that he works from a psychodynamic perspective, which is not representative of all therapy, so some of the questions are pretty specific to this orientation (such as questions regarding defense mechanisms). Additionally, many of the examples of what therapy might be like are discussed with this perspective in mind. While he is up-front about her theoretical orientation, I think that it could be confusing to non-clinicians who might not understand some of the differences in therapy techniques. While the author addresses this issue somewhat by describing a bit about different orientations, it is only a small part of the book. Much of the information about therapy is true regardless of orientation (such as characteristics of a good therapist). I found the book to be very factual and an easy read, and I think most therapists would agree. The only error I noticed was that he said psychologists are required to have a Ph.D. which is not technically true because they could also have a Psy.D. Overall, I think this is a good resource for someone who is interested in therapy.
