This is a fantastic book! Including enough detail to merit the title of history (rather than history lite) but without sacrificing a well-crafted narrative. I'm completely at a loss for what the negative reviewers on here were hoping for they didn't get. If you're interested in Civil War history this is a great little read about an often neglected but very important piece of the picture.

Other than what I learned in high school, this is the first book I have read about th civil war. I picked this book up at our church book fair this year for 50 cents. What a bargain! This book of only 125 pages is loaded with knowledge. You will learn where the word ozarks derives from. Also you will learn that before shots were fired at Fort Sumter, the first serious shots fired between the United States and Rebel troops took place in Carthage MO. The descriptions of the different battles described in this book jump off the pages at you. The last chapter of this book is about Quantrill, and the James - Younger band. If you like history this book is a must. I'm from Saint Louis MO. SO I HAVE TO TELL YOU ABOUT A NEW MUSEUM HERE THAT JUST OPENED UP LAST YEAR, THE MISSOURI CIVIL WAR MUSEUM, LOCATED IN JEFFERSON BARRACKS. JEFFERSON BARRACKS IS THE OLDEST ACTIVE MILITARY BASE WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS MUSEUM CHECK OUT REVIEWS ON TRIPADVISOR.COM
