Review # 1 was written on 2014-04-20 00:00:00 Rusty Wells Linda Gassenheimer has been writing about Florida cuisine for years, both from her post at the Miami Herald and in her over one dozen books beginning with 1991's "Keys Cuisine." "The Flavors of the Florida Keys" (Atlantic Monthly Press) brings her full circle, back to the 110 mile stretch of U.S. Highway One, where the author revisits old haunts that combine 50's style fisherman village atmosphere with updated recipes featuring the regions mainstays of flavors, spices and seafood galore. Every possible seafood combination is available in these parts and Gassenheimer's book (which also covers everything from drinks to desserts) serves as part meal ticket and part travel guide as she enunciates the subtle differences that make the different regions of the island chain from the upper Keys near Key Largo, through Islamorada, down to the tip of legendary Key West (don't forget the key limes!) As tempting as it is to try these recipes at home, the book really makes your mouth water for a trip all the way down A1A to Bertha Street in Key West, sampling every little eatery along the way. |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-11-18 00:00:00 Donald Barker This is another cookbook that turn to again and again. The recipes are as native to the Florida Keys as they are exotic. The recipe for Ziggy's Conch Chowder on page 57 is a personal favorite. |
