A systematic and somewhat plodding analysis. Facts are mostly accurate, but the treatment is prosaic with pretensions to being 'scientific'. Some good stuff on spontaneity (first thought, best thought, etc) in relation to the writers' drug use. But as a whole this work is unsophisticated; Long's theoretical engagements with drugs, addiction, etc, are rudimentary and passé. And reading this book it's as if there hadn't been any innovations/debates in literary theory since Kerouac, Burroughs and Ginsberg published their breakthrough works.

If you're unfamiliar with any of these authors you'll find everything you need to know by reading this book, including how they grew up, what drugs they took and how those drugs affected how they lived, what they wrote about and how they wrote. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
