Review # 1 was written on 2015-06-02 00:00:00 John Hyhy One of the strengths of Exalted is that as a Solar Exalt you can be anything. In many ways you're meant to be a hero, but the power is yours to do with as you see fit. It's up to the exalt whether they use it for altruistic or selfish means. Abyssals don't have that freedom. They are meant to be villains, and if they don't want to fill that role then the best they can hope for is to become a tragic anti-hero seeking redemption. As such, I think that actually playing a game centered around Abyssal PCs would be highly problematic (and the book even goes into several of the problems that arise), but as NPCs for an Exalted campaign, I think that the Abyssals and their Deathlord masters provide excellent challenges for the players in a world where little else matches, let alone exceeds, their power. This book does a good job of presenting rules and background for putting those kinds of challenges into a regular campaign, even though it's written from the point of view of running a campaign centered around Abyssal PCs. The nature of the book makes it something I would give a definite "R" rating to, especially for some of the creations in the necrotech chapter.

Sometimes they're just ideas written down for the coolness of a game, and people don't actually believe them...or at least I hope not...
