I love these Sleeping Bear alphabet books. They contain gorgeous illustrations, fascinating information, and for each letter there is a short poem appropriate for the youngest children, and a longer text section with more detailed information best appreciated by older children. I was particularly looking forward to this one, as I am interested in the oceans, and I love the cover illustration for this book. Overall, this was a superb book. The illustrations are wonderful, especially the ones of the natural world. The ones with humans were good too, but in my opinion don't have the same excellence. The information is good but I question the choices for some of the letters. I think everything that was covered is fine but wonder about some of the highlighted subjects. Many letters have multiple things mentioned for them but just one is highlighted with poem and picture. So, does the Exxon Valdez really have to be memorialized as the object for the letter Ee. Covering it is fine but Ee is also for echinoderms, or spiny-skin. I'd rather have had echindorms covered. Maybe I was just more in the mood to be uplifted by this book, wanting sunshine and light. I learned quite a bit, as I always do with these books. I had no idea how special Queen Isabella was! And, I'm going to make a point to remember than June 8th is Ocean Day. I've read several of these Sleeping Bear alphabet books and I'd like to read many more. Purchasing them for a collection for children at home or for school libraries is something that I would recommend.

I picked this book for a Preschool DiscoveryTime (a science-influenced storytime) that I was doing on the Ocean. This alphabet book features short poems in the letter description for younger kids, but includes a couple paragraphs on the side to more thoroughly explore the topic for older ones. For example, K is for Kraken and it goes on to explain about the myth of the Kraken and the actual word meaning. It is just bursting with information about Plankton, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, waves, ocean currents, and volcanoes, just to name a few. My only complaints about the letters is the Q is for Queen Isabella (in relation to Christopher Columbus exploring, mostly just because it's been proved he wasn't the first person to discover the Americas) and X is for X marks the spot (though I will admit that that is the hardest letter in the alphabet to find cool things for). Recommended for ages 3-10, 4 stars.
