In the journals that Christopher Columbus kept during his first voyage to North America, he referred to his ship, the Santa Maria, as a Nao. What was a Nao?...No one knows for sure." Christopher Columbus spent enough time in Portugal, making maps for sailors, among other things, to know that "nao" is portuguese for "ship". It's usually one of the first things learned anyway because it is un-nasalized. Nasalize it, written with a ~ over the "a", and you have "no". |
