As opposed to simply gaining information from the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook, this book provides numerous chapters with which to draw extended information chronicles the life in the west prior to 1840 for the American Indians. Furthermore, information is given regarding the geographic region of the West such as the Great American Desert, The Great Plains, and The Rockies and beyond. The book also provides greater details regarding the Mexican War and the trails pioneers traveled on their journeys to the West. Hatt also questions the various perspectives of different leaders and people of the time which can enable discussion in the classroom. The pictures in the book can be used for interpretation and discussion into the complexities of the events as well in the classroom.

Some decent information toward the front, but the chapter on Islam is too politically correct to be accurate. No mention is made of the way Islam spread -- by the sword.
