This book had more potential than I felt it really lived up to. Most book on ancient civilizations have lots of information in them, most of which I didn't know before. This book had information, but not much of it was new to me, nor was the information consistent throughout the book. On page 12, the author states "A girl was married at age 13 or 14 to an older man, who was chosen by her father." On page 42, the author states, "At about age 15, girls were married to older men." I understand that the ages probably varied between 13 and 15 for when a girl got married off, but that needs to be said in the book, instead of having one age at the beginning, and a different one towards the end. I also felt that the book spent a *lot* of time restating information that it had already stated. Yes, women got married off young. Yes, women didn't have much say in their lives. Yes, men were the only ones who were educated or allowed to really speak their minds. But do you really need to say this over and over and over and over again? If I added up the amount of times this concept was stated (in various ways) I think it would probably be one of the main ideas of the book. *sigh* I understand that ancient Greece didn't have equal rights. Now let's get on with it. Having said all that, there was fun information in here about how households were run, how they decorated their homes, how their children were raised, etc. I did enjoy that part. I also enjoyed the acetate overlays that allowed me to "see" inside of a Greece warship or the inside of a Grecian home. I just wish that this book had done more to live up to the potential that I know was there. If a library is looking to have an extensive collection of Junior/YA books on ancient cultures, this would be a good addition. Don't make it your mainstay, however.

This was a great book full of history. Felt like I was taking a history class on how the Chinese lived in American. Many surprising things I never knew. Not a story per say but full of information and facts.
