Review # 1 was written on 2014-11-16 00:00:00 Louisa-magdalene Papadopoulou Anybody who is the least bit concerned with reproductive rights needs to read this book. It's written by Congresswoman Diana Degette and she details the insidious assault against science and women by the right wing and Bush. It also talks about how bills to protect those rights are constantly being sidelined or ambushed. She explains how there's a conspiracy by the right wing to keep people from ever using more than superstition and religion to make decisions regarding reproduction, evolution, global warming, or teaching evolution in the schools. She talks about getting the "bubble bill" passed that would allow women to go to abortion clinics. It required that protestors would have to stay at least 6 feet away from the woman going to the clinic. She gives a blow-by-blow account of how one health care bill was nearly passed that would insure a fetus but not a pregnant woman. It's pretty obvious from the actions of the right wing that they value an embryo or fetus far more than an actual woman. There are several other accounts that talk about how they stopped stem cell research and tried to get creationism recognized as a scientific fact. I knew about a lot of what she writes about already, but it was still chilling to read about it and know there was an insider there who saw it all first hand. I don't know how I would've handled being so frustrated in such a conservative and oppressive environment. I probably would have given the book five stars, but she spends a lot of it talking about personal situations that didn't interest me. Still, I highly recommend the book. You might not be interested in politics, but you should be angry at the organized assault on diminishing the rights of the individual.

Review # 2 was written on 2017-10-28 00:00:00 Michelle Quintana It was interesting but mostly infuriorating. Congresswoman Degette is very clear in her disapproval of George W. Bush's decision to let his personal brand of religious beliefs override science, rationality, and the separation of church and state. But the tone of the book is never shrill and Congresswoman Degette's recounting of her personal experiences makes it very clear that her disapproval of the Bush Administration does not blindly extend to all Republicans.
