I got this book because I love McMains' books, rather than because I'd like to run a kennel. It's definitely interesting stuff, very much trying to engage the common sense section of the brain, encouraging you to think and figure things for yourself with some basic ground rules and an amount of guidance. As McMains points out, every situation is different. From the laws of your state or county to what sort of dog you feel able to handle, a lot of it has to be thought through individually, but he gives some good insights on where to begin. To be sure, portions of the book are rather dated (he discusses cell phones as if they are still a novelty, this was originally copyrighted in 1994, mind you; the edition I have was published in 2001). I found it comprehensible and cut into pleasingly small and digestible chunks, just as the rest of McMains' books have been, and of course his writing style remains unchanged. As always, the best section is the "Lessons" chapter, frankly I'd buy a book entirely composed of Story Time With Joel. As always, there are a couple of things I either question or disagree with, but everyone knows that if you get three dog handlers in a room, the only thing two of them will agree on is that the third is wrong, so that's no surprise. Worth reading if it's a subject that interests you (especially if you're a fan of McMains' other books), though his best work to date is still Dog Logic (followed by Manstopper!).

This book was written in the 90s and while it was written about 20 years ago, it still was very informative. I think this is a great book even if you do not choose to build your kennel the same way or style that the author chose. He gave very specific checklists and forms to use or as a sample for you so you dont have to start from scratch. It was easy to read and follow and helped to answer many questions.
