The Chester Chronicles was a wonderful novel - humorous, depressing, thought-provoking and a bunch of other things I simply cannot define. The main character, Chester Patterson, is a literary character who views his own life through the art, both film and literature, that he has experienced. Needless to say, I was not expecting such an intellectually challenging read from a first reads win. Just wonderful.

I really enjoyed this thoughtful coming-of-age collection of linked short stories set in the '50s and '60s. The narrator's ruminations are sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant, and often capture what's it's like to be doing things for the first time and to be excruciatingly aware of being alive.
