I enjoyed the perspective of this book but did feel that elements of it were a repeat of other recent reads - Fun Home for the coming out and All the Bright Places for the small town teenage angst. However that is my problem! If I had read this book first, I wouldn't have been feeling this way and would have simply enjoyed it for what it is - a good and funny story which actually tackles some serious issues - the death of a parent, sexuality, old people, family relationships, adoption....to name but a few. The book opens with the death of Piper's mother in tragic circumstances and the true events of her death are slowly revealed as the tangled web unfolds. Piper has a strange ally in her grandfather who is eccentric to say the least and leads the pair on some funny adventures. Piper's relationship with her father is strained, he is devoted to his work and has had to deal with the death of his wife but through more tragedy they are able to move closer as Piper's father reveals her true parentage. A good teenage read (that I also enjoyed!) and I will be recommending this title in my library.

I enjoyed this book, although the pacing did lag a bit near the middle. The main character is a teenager who is basically a loner, discovering who she is in the wake of the loss of her mother under questionable circumstances. She is learning to navigate a world living with only her distant father and her pleasantly demented grandfather who moves in with them. She has few friends to turn to and internalizes her grief and her uncertainty about who she is, and where she is heading. Family secrets are eventually revealed to her which allows healing to begin.
