This is a very analytical approach to multiracial identities. The beginning of the book examines general identity and racial development theories, and then expands more on the paradigms used with mixed race people. The author then discusses their methodology and limitations - they conducted multi-part interviews with 56 multiracial college students from 7 colleges across the Northeast and Midwest, trying to hit a variety of age levels, backgrounds, and school types (from rural community college to Ivy League). They specifically avoided the West, arguing that most mixed race studies already focus on the West. The next 5 chapters each examine a particular identity type - single monoracial, double monoracial, multiracial, non-racial, and situational. After presenting the background information, observations, and direct quotes of 4 or 5 students in a particular category, the author moves on to explore some of the common trends in terms of family background, physical appearance, cultural knowledge, microsystems and communitities, and academic environment. The book then concludes with some broader observations and recommendations for supporting mixed race students at university. I really liked how the book dived into both theory and data as well as personal stories and observations. Even though my background didn't match any of the participants exactly, their stories resonated with me. Meanwhile, the theory and analysis helped me make sense of my understanding of race and identity. Finally, this book deserves major props for including clear, well-organized data tables that are both presented and referenced throughout the text. This lended quantitative evidence to the theoretical analyses and trend-finding in the book.

How did I not read this sooner. This should be required reading (and often is) for anyone teaching basic writing or stretch composition.
