Review # 1 was written on 2018-09-13 00:00:00 John Johnson This charming books explains how some Jews were "hidden Jews". Working in a community that is 47% Hispanic, every year there is someone who comes into the synagogue and quietly says something like, "I think my grandmother was Jewish, am I?" This important book tells the story of families, centuries ago, that came to the New World, in this case Sante Fe, NM and kept Jewish traditions alive, passing those traditions down from generation to generation, l'dor v'dor. Appropriate for children and adults. Although this is a Passover story, it is also appropriate before Kol Nidre, when we talk about vows made and promises kept. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-12-12 00:00:00 Stephen Judy A lovely picture book introduction to the concept of crypto-Jews. When Jacobo befriends a boy who is Jewish, he recognizes similarities between his friend's home and family practices and his grandmother's. Abuelita eventually shares with Jacobo the story of their family's expulsion from Spain during the Inquisition, and their safeguarding of Jewish religious customs through the centuries. Informative and moving. Age appropriate for initiating conversations about religious freedom with the under-10 set. |
