When I saw this for sale on the book wholesale website I frequent, I knew I had to buy it. Before Dan Savage, there was Isadora Alman. While Dan is ok, I really enjoyed Isadora because she had a softer touch. I used to pick up the local paper during college just for her column and the weird news. I also read her online column. I guess not a lot has changed because I still love reading about sexuality/sex and weird news! I bought the book without reading anything about it (I mean, it was only $2). When I realized this was a collection of responses Isadora had gathered from her column and her online forum, I wasn't sure how to feel. Would it get repetitive? I wanted Isadora! Well, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Isadora organized it by chapter and broke them into subcategories. Some only had one response, some had a few pages. Responses varied from one sentence to a long paragraph. None were overwhelming and I felt there was a lot of variation in them. Some echoed each other, but added something new to the conversation. It was all very well balanced so I didn't walk away frustrated. In some ways the responses that echoed each other were nice, because it showed that many people (at least the ones Isadora selected) agreed on topics. I found this especially true in the anal section for whatever reason. One thing that surprised me about the book is how much I reacted to people's responses. I found this especially true reading some responses from men that came off as sexist to me. Although it frustrated me I appreciated the diversity of the book so I could get a fuller picture of human sexuality. Overall I was very happy reading the book. I felt the chapters/subcategories probably covered the majority of relationship/sex acts to some extent. This book doesn't go into depth on any one topic, though, so if you're looking for a specific book on anal/BDSM/etc, this isn't it, but it's a good addition to your collection. My only complaint is that some of the language Isadora uses while introducing chapters is out of touch with the trans community or incorrect. If this is a problem for you, avoid! It happened rarely and I think it was behind the times versus willful ignorance, but for some that would make this book a no-no. Well, one more complaint. Some of the advice in the book isn't necessarily bad but isn't necessarily true for everyone. I.e., supplements, herbs, etc. I think Isadora should have included a warning to take the advice with a grain of salt. Will I? Absolutely! But not everyone understands that if it's published in a book it shouldn't be taken seriously. I would also like to note that the page for this book doesn't seem to be collecting the posted reviews/ratings very well. If you're reading this, the page seems to rate it lower than it actually is. I suggest checking it out if you're interested, it's definitely worth it and is a book you could easily put down and return to if you get tired of it.

I thought this book would be a compilation of letters written to and answered by Isadora Alman. Sadly, no. But I got this off Bookmooch and didn't do any research, just saw a book by "Ask Isadora" and went for it. This book is actually made up of advice sent in by Isadora's readers. Maybe the advice was posted to her website. I am a bit fuzzy on the details. A lot of it is of the "it worked for me" variety. Some of it seems pretty good and reasonable and some made me say, "I don't know about that..." Worth a read, I think, if you can get your hands on a copy.
