A Natural History Guide to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park by Donald Linzey (2008 UT Press)(508.768). This is a particularly well-done volume on the ecology and the natural workings of the park as a whole by one who has spent over fifty years as a naturalist in and around the park's environs. It is recognized as the most thorough book on the natural history of the Great Smokies. I want a copy of this book; it's very well done. My rating: 7.5/10, finished 2009.

It's weird, and depressing, to read places including Chicago, Calumet, Naperville, and Waukegan described as "beautiful," "wild," and teeming with wildlife. Since we can't see the prairie any more, we can at least read about it.
