I am grateful to have learned about a few women in this book such as Saints Angela Merici and Margaret d'Youville. As a whole, though, this book is very white. I was especially disappointed in the glossing over of the 20th century, the chapters I had been most excited to read.

I've been helped by everything I've read by William Placher. He is a clear thinker and a fine writer. Perhaps best of all is the generous spirit in which he writes and interacts with various ideas and their advocates. In this book the author argues that in the pluralistic environment in which the Christian community finds itself it simply needs to remain faithful to its own vision of things given to it in the Story rather than by making an appeal to some philosophical foundation external to the story itself.
