It takes place during the era of Jim Crow and shows how not only white women worked to maintain their feminine image while lobbying for better schooling for their children, the prohibition of alcohol, and eliminating the double standard of sexual morality; but it also details the lives of black women in North Carolina who had to struggle to overcome racial stereotypes and work to create a better life for themselves and their families. |
