Review # 1 was written on 2020-01-19 00:00:00 Julimarie Gresham This collection of essays, although published in 2004, still covers a lot of ground in many interesting ways. Each of the essays feels unique and thought-provoking, despite the fact that American marriage equality is no longer a topic of intense debate. 5 out of 5 |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-06-02 00:00:00 Josh Pritch I bought this book specifically to read Alexander Chee's essay, and enjoyed (almost) all the other essays as much as his. It was particularly interesting to read this collection 15 years after gay marriage was legalized in Massachusetts and 4 years after it became the law of the land. There has been so much sturm und drang about such a basic human desire'to be joined with another and to have that union recognized. And, just like everyone else, gay people have different opinions on marriage. One of my favorite lines is Stacey D'Erasmo's: "The good marriage...is less license than it is tattoo, the conscious acknowledgement that we mark one another, change one another." |
