Come Back, Jack! By Catherine and Laurence Anholt Review by Luisa Daniel Come Back, Jack! Is based off of a girl and her little brother. The book starts by her not liking books but the rest of her family did, she thought Books are boring and she played in the yard to find a real adventure, while her brother who did not know how to read he still loved books. While she was playing in the yard trying to figure out what to do she noticed her brother crawling in the book and she followed. Through the inside of the book she was trying to find her brother Jack, but the book he was reading incorporated multiple childrens books with the main characters name being Jack. while she is trying to find her brother she goes through Jack and Jill, Jack Be Nimble, The House That Jack Built, Little Jack Horner, and finally Jack and the Beanstalk. When reaching there she finds her brother and they both head out of the Giants castle but he notices them. When getting out of the castle and at the beanstalk they leave and when leaving they are out of the book. Then she finally realizes that books are not boring they are actually fun. This book by Catherine and Laurence Anholt capture a young girl finding her love of books by her brother leading her through an adventure in the book he is interested in. During the book there is a lot of white space until Jack and his sister are inside the book, once inside the book the whole page is filled with color and the theme of the story that she is walking though in the attempt to find her brother. The inside of the hard cover pages of the book also tells the stories of each childrens stories incorporated in the book. The illustrations in this book were simple yet straight to the point, if you had a background on the childrens stories before reading this book the reader would have been able to point out which story is which. I thought this was a nice childrens picture book. During reading the book it is easy to notice that the main character was getting more and more interested into the reading as she got further in and trying to find her brother. Come Back, Jack By: Catherine Anholt Review by: Hannah Reis I enjoyed reading this and took interest in the storyline. The sister went out to play wither her brother Jack, who loved to read and his sister certainly did not. Jack ended up falling into the book and coming into a mystical fantasy book. The funny aspect of Jack running around while his sister searched for him added a comical effect to the reading. The use of the phrase "come back jack" became somewhat repetitive showing the title of the book and what part it came from. I enjoyed the overall artwork of this book because it was known where they entered the book that it was a new unusual place. A place where animals talked and giants lived with large bean stocks and loud noises. The text was well written and the use of large swirly letters helped with portraying how it was read as a whole. I enjoyed the ending of how the girl saw what Jack did when he read I somewhat thought of it as a metaphor of reading like, jumping into a book is how readers become interested and the sister became interested in by diving in and once it was over and had to leave the world she realized it was fun and exciting, just like how books can be in real life.
