c.1993 This book is written by Patricia McMahon who worked for Arirange magazine in humor column. She first visited Seoul in 1986 and stayed several years. She's a world-traveler. Photographed by Michael F. O'Brien who teach high school art in South Korea (28yers~). He also produced Far Reaching Fragrance, a photo-essay on Korea. He lives in Seoul with his family. Writing style is like journal entry + non-fiction on Korean culture. The narrative is third person sympathetic for Chi-Hoon who desperately wants to receive a prize that principal gives out in morning assembly. Principal Lee tells the students that the police station nearest the school is awarding this week's prizes to the three students who are the most dutiful and respectful. Chihoon constantly compares her behaviors to Shimchung and tries to be a 'better daughter'. She also has a desire to have golden hair for some reason. p.14 "I will try harder. All this week I will be the best daughter, the most dutiful daughter since Shim Chung. And then I will win next week's prize." p.15 Chi-hoon thinks about how brave Shim Chung was to go with the sailors. Chihoon would like to be that brave. But if sailors came right now, up from the Han River, looking for a good daughter to sacrifice, Chi-hoon thinks she would not go. She would offer Chi-young instead. You can always catch her correcting herself. p.20 "She thinks that Shim Chung would never have wanted to sacrifice her sister to a sea monster. So today she waits while Choi young reads the paper first. p.21 I am happy today. All day I was as good as Shim Chung. If the prize were given today, I would win. I did not even tell So-yon that she was wrong when she said Miss KOrea was beautiful. I think Miss Korea has ugly hair. p.31 I pretended I was Shim Chung. I asked Buddha for long golden hair. p.47 Shim Chung would have been happy just to be a good daughter-prize or no. And Chi-hoon? She isn't so sure. She is certain that someday soon there will be a prize for the most dutiful runner.

Good for Young Children The images are pretty basic yet attractive. The walrus as old man and carpenter as cat are well chosen motifs.
