Review # 1 was written on 2019-11-14 00:00:00 Kameron Duncan One of my favorite memories this airman shared was getting sent to his flying unit in theater and getting sent to Africa and left at a base with no flying unit. Come to find out, the unit he was supposed to be sent to had moved to Italy. So the author and another pilot had to beg their way onto transports and it took them a couple months to actually find their unit. And when they did, the initial reception was one of annoyance. So they are standing outside the HQ building after being chewed out by the HQ major and a general walks up and makes a comment about how unkept they were. The author is pissed off at this point and so he launches into a angry explanation of how they have been wearing the same set of clothes for weeks because their gear didn't make it off the plane in Africa and all their difficulties finding their unit and how they aren't even welcomed there. The general listens, and then marches into the major's office and chews out the major for not taking care of them now that they are there. And he also wants to know where the rest of his pilots are that were supposed to be there months ago? The author talks about his many combat missions escorting bombers and the pilots that didn't make it back. His conclusion looking back many years later is that he wouldn't trade his experiences for anything, but he also would never want to do it again. Short book but worth the read.
