Hey, I am no gardener (although I have reviewed a book on topiary while on goodreads!) but I am a collector of miniature books so this one had to be purchased. And although I am not green fingered and therefore hardly qualified to comment, this volume contains plenty of wisdom for those tending gardens either large or small. I can appreciate a fine garden even though I don't practise gardening and one of my gardening heroines Gertrude Jekyll stated, 'The love of gardening is a seed that once sown never dies' and with William Blake writing, 'To create a little flower is the labour of ages', I am delighted that the seed was never sown for me. It was Francis Bacon who got it right when he stated, 'The breath of flowers is far sweeter in the air ... than in the hand' and C D Warner convinces me that I was correct in avoiding gardening when he says, 'What a man needs in gardening is a cast-iron back with a hinge in it'. Voltaire tells us 'One should cultivate his garden' but in doing so it is worth remembering what Thomas Fuller said, 'No garden is without weeds' so I feel a little better about my pots, practically untended since Linda died, because there is the odd weed popping up among - well, among whatever is in them! The surprising thing about this little book is the number of proverbs from all over the world that relate to gardening. There are Spanish, French, English, Danish, Yiddish, Native American, Latin, Chinese, Albanian, Estonian, Dutch, Finnish, Gypsy, German, Turkish, Indian and Bulgarian and they all make salient points that would resonate with the gardener. Rudyard Kipling forcefully states why I am not a gardener when he says, 'Gardens are not made by sitting in the shade'. No I am sure they are not but how much more relaxing is sitting in the shade reading a good book? Much more relaxing, and that will do for me while I admire other people's efforts. This little volume, which has a gorgeous flower charm bookmark, is enhanced by some charming illustrations by Diane Bigda.

Good for history of bookmaking etc. (Thin volume.)
