Found this among my books and it served as a delightful afternoon diversion while waiting for the plumber to finish. Each 2 page spread consists of a clever poem, quote or truism by a notable cat-lover on the left-hand side matched with an appropriate colorful visual depiction of the feline(s) in question on the right. Easy to read quickly; much better to browse and linger over. Writings come from different time periods, but the 1800’s seems to predominate. Were cats more popular then or was poetry just more lyrical? Selections are grouped into 5 chapters: Catlings and Kittens; The Sphinx; Tiger! Tiger!; A Clowder of Cats and Requiescat. Best of all I discovered a lovely little ode to copy out next time a friend loses a favorite feline. Always a challenging time. Most enjoyable read ... for me! My cats just liked rubbing the corners, as usual.

I gave this book to my daughter for Christmas in 1991 (the only reason I know that is that I inscribed it to her). For some reason, I got it from my bookshelf and read through it again this past Christmas. It really is a lovely...the right side pages are all photographs of cats in art, mostly paintings. The left side is quotations or poetry that seem to relate to the art. This is a lovely book.
