another very good book by Eberle. i really like how he goes through scripture and explains that the HOly Spirit comes upon people and they are changed, and THAT is what the baptism of the Spirit is. though speaking in tongues is one "coming upon", it's not the only one. he even goes through the testimonies of other ministers, such as John Wesley, DL Moody, William Booth, John G. Lake, AA Alan, Smith Wigglesworth, AW Tozer, and others, and shows how they believed that believers needed an aditional work of the Holy Spirit in order to live sanctified Christian lives. John G Lake even went on to explain that he had 5 different "coming upons" in his lifetime, each with different, lasting results. the one thing that i think detracted from its impact, to me, was his explanations of both sides of the "filled with the Spirit" expression. it's fine that he tried to empathize with two differing sides, but in the end i thought all it did was express an opinion. for instance, to me the expression "filled with the Spirit" has always been used as a euphemism for another coming up on of the Holy Spirit, and not an exclusionary statement that means that i'm filled with the spirit because i believe such-and-such and others are not. in the end, this is a great book. i really believe this book has me even more excited and hungry for the work of the Holy Spirit than ever before. it had a profound impact on the way i view the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

this was a really great fresh look at the work of the Holy Spirit. dave and i were just talking about this! it's not just about a one time experience or even a two time deal. the spirit of God can come upon you many times with many different evidences of this. speaking in tongues is not refuted (for it is a very real experience), but the biblical evidence of being filled with the spirit of God (which happens at the time of salvation) is in the fruit of the spirit. very good stuff. i do not like how he seems to deal harshly a group for misconceiving. i think he just has to realize that it is not of malice - just of misunderstanding.
