Review # 1 was written on 2014-05-08 00:00:00 Mike Trower A good overview, but some topics could be better explained or elaborated upon (for example the chapter on the arts contains almost no information about visual arts). The author relies on using a lot of long block quotations from other historical sources instead of paraphrasing. Sometimes he mentions the authors of these passages in the text, but other times they're just endnoted so that you have to look in the back of the book to find the source, which can be somewhat annoying. |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-10-09 00:00:00 Javin Hope I love this book. It's well written and an excellent overview of the period. Clearly, it's written from a largely capitalist perspective, but it also highlights some of the positive points about living in a communist society. Will buy to add to my own collection. A great companion to the Stalin book I added to this list recently. |
