Yes I did read a 500-page guide to a 20-year-old game. I experienced a two-month SimCity 2000 obsession last year (yes, in 2015--listen, I'm not much of a video game player these days) and was trying to learn more about how the simulation worked. Along the way I discovered this book, which, as another advantage of my being literally decades out of touch with gaming, wasn't in much demand anymore so copies were cheap and abundant. It does indeed intricately cover how the game works, so it's worth it if that's something relevant to your interests. But the author talked to everyone involved with its production, not only the primary designers and developers but the artists, musicians, and others who worked at Maxis. Which meant it also turned out to be a really interesting look at how software development worked in the 90s.

About the equivalent of having Will Wright sit next to while you play and give you tips. Includes very specific and detailed tips as well as cheats and pictures and info on absurdly awesome cities that people have built.
