Review # 1 was written on 2016-02-24 00:00:00 Mark Washburn I have mixed feelings about this novel. I loved many things and didn't like many others. GOOD: A mystery novel with a main character who is Hispanic, Mexican-American. The story takes places in California and it explores the Chicano identity and the struggles at the time. I loved to read a mystery novel by a Latino author! :) NOT SO GOOD: it's very poetic in some way. It's a bit hard to identify and recall each of the many characters. So if you read it, just pay a lot of attention when a character is introduced. The story is written in 2 parts with an "intermission" of like 3 chapters. Yeah, that was unusual. Finally, I just didn't like the end because (spoiler alert) it just ends. (This is the first part of a series, so I guess that was expected) |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-10-29 00:00:00 Douglas Drake There is so much that's good about this novel, though it doesn't quite gel for me as a mystery. I like the characters, the California settings, the Chicano historical aspect, and the author's poetic style. Most of the characters are so interesting that I wished the book were longer so I could get to know them even better. Sadly, one very likable character dies way too soon. Despite these pluses, the mystery is weak. I guessed the killer early on. That's never good in a mystery. Still, I want to read the next books in this mystery series. |
