Hoshino was one of the best, some say the best, wildlife photographer of his time. He could shoot pictures of animals that seemed alive. I would look at Hoshino's pictures with amazement but did not think much about the photographer. I heard about a photographer who was killed by a bear but did not connect that death with the fantastic photographer whose work I admired. While reading another book, The Blue Bear, I learned of the life of Hoshino and wanted to see his work. My library had this book. Hoshino spent half of his years in Alaska, a land he had come to love and fearlessly move throughout the wildest areas. His special love was bears -- unfortunately the bears, or one of them, was also his demise. This is a beautiful book with sparkling eyed bears (a special photographic technique of Hoshino's) who romp, hunt, fish, eat, and interact as families. It is also a glimpse into Hoshino's view of life in the wilds of Alaska.

Absolutely loved the warmth in the voice of the narration. You could feel the love felt for Grizzly bears by the author when reading this special book. The photos highlighted another side to Grizzly bears that I had not experienced put into words quite like this. There were definite explicit and implicit calls for protection and deep appreciation for these bears.
