Review # 1 was written on 2012-04-05 00:00:00 Dominic Sindoni No surprises in this book: It's all about making delicious, lovely birthday cakes tough enough to frost in layers and delicate enough to melt in your mouth. And don't worry about how specific the recipes are - while you get best results with room-temperature ingredients, I've started with rock-hard butter and frigid eggs and still had excellent results. If you must experiment, though, adding spices and flavorings to the basic cake recipes works very well. Use this book if: You want to make a layer cake that won't fall apart when you decorate it or you want a versatile "scratch" cake and frosting reference. Avoid this book if: You don't want to risk 4 people demolishing a 12-person 2-layer cake with filling and frosting. |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-04-01 00:00:00 Travis Flasschoen The Birthday Cake contains great photographs and some novel ideas. There are some cakes that I would really like to try making, and some recipes really seem to lend themselves to certain family members. One aspect that I felt made this book realy stand out from other cake cook/decorating books is its little use of fondant. Personally, I am not a fan of fondant and believe that beautiful cakes should taste even better than they look. A doll cake is featured in this book and it is admittedly the prettiest one I could find in a book or the internet. Also, the Confectioner's Sugar Frosting was delicious! |
