After searching on here and Amazon, I see that nobody has ever reviewed or rated this book. Now, after having trudged my way through reading it, I know why. I'm the only person to ever dedicate myself to finishing this awful book. Let me say that I have been reading Historical Romance Novels for over 30 years. I read a lot of them. I mean A LOT! I have never felt compelled to write a review on here until this book. How this story got published is baffling to me! It does not fit the typical Romance Outline that we all know. So the fact that it was published in the typical Historical Romance Novel genre, complete with the cover, truly baffles me. Now, I'm not saying it is bad because it doesn't follow the standard romance outline. Although, that is part of it. The plot was horrible and the characters were equally as horrible, with no life to them at all. Only one secondary character was memorable - Abel Clary, the Fiddler. Spoilers: Regency England. Story starts out with Polly (17) being married to a much older, abusive man. Polly hates having sex with him and being married to him. She meets a traveling Fiddler (Abel Clary) and escapes. Abel is a nice fellow, although he isn't too happy having a young girl tagging along as he leaves London. The two end up in the country at an Earl's country estate. Polly keeps the fact that she is running from an abusive husband a secret. The much older Earl decides to keep Polly as his mistress, but pass her off as his ward. The Fiddler leaves her there, knowing that she will be taken care of. Polly becomes the Earl's mistress in secret. She meets the Earl's nephew (Grey). Grey is good for nothing. He sponges off his Uncle, the Earl. He constantly gambles and is need of more money. He is aimless in life. And he is our Hero! And he doesn't get any better either. One night Grey takes Polly out somewhere (still unknowing that Polly is his Uncle's mistress). They run into Polly's abusive husband. Polly admits that she is married and is on the run. Grey leaves her where they are! I think they are at Covent Gardens or Vauxhall or somewhere. Anyway, he runs off! Literally runs away! Leaving Polly to make her way back to the Earl's on her own. Time goes by. Grey joins the army after being guilted into doing it. Geez! Not very honorable. Grey comes back and professes his love for Polly. Polly loves him too. Honestly, no chemistry at all between these two. All the characters in the story are so bland and lifeless. Except for Abel Clary, the Fiddler. Polly confesses she has been the mistress of his Uncle, the Earl. Once again, Grey leaves. He doesn't run this time though. But he is angry. During all this. Grey's sister commits suicide. Stella was another boring character. I have no idea why she was even written in. Her little side story and killing herself made no sense to the plot. I didn't even care that she killed herself. That is how lifeless this book and characters were. Polly becomes pregnant with the Earl's child. She runs away a few times in the last part of the book. For stupid reasons that do not add any life at all to the book. She lives with Grey while pregnant. He is worthless. Still gambling and wasting money. The older Earl kills her abusive husband in an accident. So Polly is now free to marry Grey. She married Grey (the nephew) and raises the Earl's child as their own. I hated this book. I kept reading because I kept thinking, "Surely this book must get better. It was published, after all. It must have some redeeming qualities." Well, no, it didn't get better and there are no redeeming qualities at all. How this got published I will never know!

Pleasant enough Okay story. Very predictable. Glad it was free. It seemed as tho this author wrote this story in a more innocent era.
