Review # 1 was written on 2011-04-19 00:00:00 Steve Tremblay I enjoyed this. It would be good to be able to say this poet is a master of form, or probes death in a new way, or uses lush, unusual language but in fact he is just a very funny guy. I won't say this is an out-and-out barrel of laughs, or that it was without its weaker links, but it was very entertaining and indeed I did laugh out loud a number of times. Maybe it had to do with my mood but my favorite poems were all balled up together near the middle: Truth & Beauty, Idolatry, The Seasons, Expulsion from the Island of Forgetfulness, and Noah Webster. "Expulsion from the Island of Forgetfulness" is about a class trip to a museum and starts like this: They like getting out because school sucks, but the museum sucks, too, and this painting sucks the most. *** Profane, I know, but I certainly do hear the voice of real teenagers in there, bored with everything. Here are some others: "Truth & Beauty" - "Q & A" - "Even Ornaments of Speech are Forms of Deceit" - |
