Witty, wise, rollicking: all we've come to expect of Ron Koertge. I Take My Toes completely for granted. In a marriage this would call for counseling or at least a weekend somewhere with a peculiar bed and wall paper. But this is not a marriage. These are my toes. I am only thinking about them now because the one who wanted roast beef is broken, and he cannot endure the tropical ghetto of the Florsheim. The injured party sits there, mostly black, beside his yellow neighbor and their salmon-colored pals looking for all the world like an ad for UNICEF.

it was the mid-nineties and i was in high school and i lived in westchester county, so i read poetry. this is one of very few that i kept. i re-read it recently looking for a line that i love and think of everyday looking out of the bus window from the v.a. hospital to duke children's. it is: coming out of the hospital with the news that she has a skull like marmalade and may, at fifteen, one day learn to talk like a fish. the whole rest of the book does not come close to that line.
