This is mostly a commentary on the Greek, with an informative introduction. The commentary is extremely comprehensive, sometimes making connections to other sources that seem rather tenuous, but the commentary is fascinating to read along with the Greek. Lucian's preposterous story is great fun in itself, but he makes numerous references which beg for explanation. Georgiadou and Larmour are in the unfortunate position of having to explain some of Lucian's jokes, but at least I was able to get in on the jokes after the fact. (The parodies of Homer and Herodotus are pretty obvious though.) Highly recommended if you're reading the Greek text. This was a great companion to Lucian's A True Story: An Intermediate Greek Reader: Greek Text with Running Vocabulary and Commentary.

Not the most riveting reading, of course, although even in that regard, it's much better than most. But this book gives a good amount of detail on a large number of topics in the non-Biological Sciences, from Physics and Chemistry through Astronomy and Geology. It's an excellent intro to a large range of subject matter, and is mostly pretty understandable and readable for the non-specialist.
