It's the Depression years and Lizzie, orphaned by a car accident, is sent from London to live with her aunt and family in the Dakota plains. It isn't London, and Lizzie doesn't like her new life. Her relatives are kind in their way, but work on their farm is hard and constant. When a huge storm hits, Lizzie is left in the house while her uncle and cousins tend to the cattle and her aunt goes outside to take care of the chickens. Lizzie hears a faint cry for help and finds her aunt injured by a fallen tree branch. By the end, Lizzie learns that her help is important, too. There are some big gaps in this book. For example, we don't know why Lizzie is on the train or where she's come from until later than I'd expect. There's a bit about Lizzie missing very concrete parts of her previous life and disliking farm chores, but almost nothing about the emotional difficulty of adjusting to a new country, a new life, and a new family. Still, it's written at about a 3rd grade level and may well be appropriate to that age. It certainly gives a useful perspective on life at that time and in that place.

It brought tears to my eyes, a very heartwarming story of a young girl suddenly thrust into a whole new life due to a tragic accident in which Lizzie lost both her parents. A great example of the resiliency of children this book is sure to help many children through difficult and lonely times.
