This book, Studies in the Psychology of Sex has been on my list of books to read for many many years. It was on the original list of recommended books I received that prompted me to create my own reading list. I was surprised to learn that this is a multi-volume work. I have and plan to read four volumes of it. I have recently seen that there are even more volumes than that. At this point, I don’t think I will pursue the matter past these first four books. This book is dated 1927 and purports to be the third edition. I always figured much of the information in this book would be outdated because it is so old but thought it might be of some historical interest. Having read this first volume now, my feelings on this are mixed. There are three parts to this first book. They almost don’t really much relate to sex. The first part has to do with modesty. Apart from pointing out that feminine modesty leads to masculine passion (does it really?) this discussion then wanders off into a scholarly discussion of what constitutes modesty in different cultures around the world. This seems to me to be more a matter of cultural anthropology rather than either psychology or sex. But at least it is interesting. The next section deals with what the author calls sexual periodicity. This seems to be an area that particularly interests him, and some of the studies in this section are ones he has done himself. The whole subject seems silly to me, but then again it seems that nobody knew much of anything about the one obviously periodic factor in sex at that time, namely menstruation, so possibly anything to advance general knowledge in this area seemed to be a good thing. I am amazed that so little was known about the physiological functions of the reproductive system at that time though; it was less than a hundred years ago, and the modern world was already coming into being. The third section deals with auto-eroticism, including but not limited to masturbation. This section points up (although not intentionally, I’m sure) how much attitudes have changed since this book was written. Every study cited (and there are vast numbers of them) seems to indicate that most of the people being studied probably engage in some form of auto-eroticism; nevertheless, the author of this book and the authors of most of the other studies he cites seem to feel that auto-eroticism is a perverted and abnormal practice, for which the best cure is marriage.

Excellent resource for anyone wishing a sound understanding in the human sexual instinct.
