This is a touching biography of a little-known Protestant Reformer. Bernardino Ochino was a famous and beloved Italian monk when he came under suspicion for his biblical teaching and was forced to flee for his life. He spent the rest of his life moving from country to country, never safe from persecution by the Catholic Church. But in every place, he devoted himself to the service of Italian Protestant refugees who had gathered in church communities throughout Europe. He was well-respected by the great Reformers. Yet his life ended tragically after he inadvertently offended the Calvinist leaders of his town and was banished. I found Ochino to be more relatable than the other reformers of his day. His writings had a modern sensibility to them. There was a sweetness in his relationship with God that was evident in his letters and sermons. He was gentle to those of differing beliefs. He rejected Roman Catholicism, but wasn’t comfortable with dogmatic 5-point Calvinism. He pondered the notion of religious freedom. In short, he was ahead of his time. Yet he made the most of his life and devoted it to serving others.

Excellent and informative, this is a "warts-and-all" telling of the history of America's greatest rock band. If you think you know all there is to know (as I did), you will be pleasantly surprised at the wealth of information in this book, even if you may not have really wanted to know some of it.
