I go into this already familiar with much of Greene's "research" and advocacy, and I feel he is frequently dishonest. Instead of the rightwing think-tank he worked at when he wrote this, he now works at a bought and paid for "endowed chair" at a public university giving him a more credible appearance as he spreads his viewpoint. The Walton family, the multi-billionaire Walmart founders who run the virulently anti-public education Walton Foundation (which funneled millions of dollars to Utah via Parents for Choice in Education to fight for the voucher law in 2007 among the hundreds of millions they direct to favored campaigns and candidates all over the country), gave Arkansas University hundreds of millions of dollars. Coincidentally, the university started up a "College of Education Reform" right after that donation and hired a bunch of anti-public ed. think-tank staffers to well-paid public jobs with pensions so they could write about the evils of all the lazy public school employees with pensions. Anyway, I'll at least skim everything. I don't know if I can finish it. Basically, if Greene claims it, look for the many other researchers finding the opposite and/or critiquing Greene's research for its design decisions that lead to predetermined pro-voucher outcomes. Later: I read over half. There could be some points to argue over poverty and its effects on learning, but I don't believe Greene is really interested. He says test scores are only and best way to measure education, period. Attacks other studies while overlooking GLARING weaknesses in his gold star voucher studies and huge effects on nearby schools. He is paid very good money to do what he does, and he puts out a veneer of credibility for all sorts of people looking to eliminate and/or profit from public education.

What a horrible attempt at research.
