Never feed a bear. Got that? So, I haven't been reading these in the order they were written, but I have emailed the author and she said you don't have to. Just one more to go and then I'll be able to say I've read all thirteen (started in April). They are each only 140-150ish pages, but it has been a struggle to get through them due to other activities/employment/classes I choose to pursue. My basket of books all picked out for summer reading still sits on the floor of the livingroom. I plan to finish the last book before school starts on Monday morning and THEN...oh boy, THEN I plan to do a grand book talk and turn them loose on my fifth graders. I hope at least a few of the kids will enjoy them...

Jack and Ashley's mom is asked to help in the Great Smokey Mountains to figure out why there have been bear attacks. Jack and Ashley meet 16 year old Yonah Firekiller and 14 year old Merle Chapman. Both of these young men do not like each other but when a bear attacks them, Merle uses his beloved guitar given to him by his father, the hit the bear and send it away. A good story with history of the park, a lesson on working with nature, and seeing how friendships can grow throughout adversity.
