He has a feel for people and places that is unequaled, and the result is a series of novels that simply beg to be read. Mr. Rankin isn't satisfied to merely write a detective novel; he feels compelled to psychoanalyze every character in his books without mercy, and then offers up his observations and deductions to the reader to make what they can of them. Truly fascinating on many levels.
