Review # 1 was written on 2013-04-16 00:00:00 Marcello Santmyres This book is a teen friendly, version of the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook that can be found online. Unlike the online version, this book allows teens to skim through occupations or look for a specific occupation of interest. Jobs are grouped into eight categories that range from executive, administrative, and managerial to professional and technical, factory production and even helpers and laborers. The handbook starts with providing tips to identify jobs that may be of interest to teens as well as terms that they may need to know. Each occupation includes information on what the job entails, subjects to study, education and training needed, earnings, and job outlook. Although he book does not include any pictures or color, the layout and graphics are enough to keep young adults looking for the occupation that would best suit them. Information given is easy to understand and the book has a selection of 250 jobs for readers to browse through. I think that it is great for the author to suggest that readers should discover more by asking questions that may help a teenager decide if the occupation would suit them. For example, in order for someone to discover more about radio and television announcers and newscasters, it is recommended to make morning announcements for the school. The tips given in the book can benefit any teen contemplating what they want to be when they grow up. |
