The obsession of high NAEP scores continues. Singapore is viewed to receive high NAEP scores while the US is mediorcre. When adjusted for poverty rates, the US is also on the top but politicians continue to blame education. Singapore has a small population of citizens who are well taken care of and prosperous. They bring in people from other countries as guest workers to do the menial work. Still it is true that the US focuses on rote memorization and algorithms in Math and Singapore focuses on concept development. The Common Core standards have focused on using concept development in math and this workbook is the result. Concept development in Math is important and there is nothing wrong in learning it. It is actually fun. This workbook has a guide on how Singapore math is taught and how the problems in this book should be tackled. Not a bad workbook.

I enjoyed reading this to my son. He loves reading and learning about WW II. He asked questions and was fully engaged. I also learned more about WW II. I liked that because it was made for kids, the author left out the gruesome details. The last paragraph in the book was probably the most enlightening to me... "the war that had cost the world 50 million lives was finally over, but even today. The politics of the world continue to be shaped by the events of the years 1939 to 1945." That's so true! Another fact I didn't know... " the state of Israel was founded as a home for the displaced survivors of the Holocaust." This book was a great depiction of the horrors of war. I would encourage all ages to read this if they wanted to learn more about the Second World War. I also liked the human interest stories that the author put within all the facts. There was also crafts and what not, but we didn't do any of them.
