Review # 1 was written on 2016-10-24 00:00:00 christopher sharron This book is good in parts and quite dry in others. It does provide a comprehensive review and biography of Salisbury, which had been somewhat lacking prior to 1999, and does impact on the reader how important he was in the stream of history, following Disraeli and opposing Gladstone and his successor Rosebery. It also explains his "splendid isolationism" policy which is possibly one of the most misunderstood policies in political history. I originally used this for my dissertation on Disraeli and it is quite good at explaining the change and evolution in their friendship and the trust that eventually came between them. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-01-02 00:00:00 Mikki Williams This book was just lovely. A light read that also made me think about how humans develop habits and feelings and empathy. I missed this (real life) character of Madeleine when the book was over. |
